Where Does God Live?
Published in Hardcover by HJ Kramer (March, 1997)
Authors: Holly Bea and Kim Howard
Average review score:

I loved this story.
"Where Does God Live" was a charming book that left me smiling after reading it to my nieces age 4 and 7. The text was sweet; the pictures were colorful and original. I especially appreciated how the narrative opened the door to dialogue and discussion amongst us three gals. I can't think of a better gift for a child than an opportunity to explore spirituality through color and verse. And, I can't imagine how anyone would be disappointed in this gift to a child's library or their own.

I highly recommend this book for parents of young children!
This is a sweet, touching story of a young girl's search for answers about God. Holly Bea explains His presence in words that young children can understand. A beautifully written and illustrated book that I bought in preparation for starting a family. I've read it to other adults who get tears in their eyes when they hear the story. It is THAT good!

Excellent for any age!!
This book is a wonderful way to introduce God into someone's life. Not only for children but for adults too. In today's crazy world this book hits on the big picture of God and not the ever-changing and confusing religions that can warp that beautiful image. This book is also great for any classroom. I would gladly read it to my students!

The Edge: The Guide to Fulfilling Dreams, Maximizing Success and Enjoying a Lifetime of Achievement

Absolutely the best compolation of motivational quotes ever!
I have been a competetive high school, collegiate, and international athlete. Now I am a successful High School coach. There has never been a better book to aid you in dealing with all aspects of sport. The Edge compiles some of the greatest athletes and coaches' "secrets to success." This is a must have for both the beginning athlete and the seasoned coach.

Human Potential at its Best
The Edge motivated my son to be a state champion in wrestling in a competitive state. Reading the book as an 8th grader, he started to write quotes from the book on 3 by 5 cards and carried them wherever he would go and would read them often to keep himself focused on winning a title even though at times he barely would be good enough to make the team at times. The book taught him that hard work makes dreams come true and that persistance does pay off in the end. The lessons learned from this book have proven to be lifelong and after he did win the state title, he has shown consistently that the lessons were long lasting into his life after wrestling. The book is a must for young people of all ages. Thanks Howard for giving us this treasure.

THE GREATEST BOOK FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO MOTIVATE
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. IT COVERS EVERY ASPECT THAT AN ATHLETE WILL COME ACROSS , WHETHER IT BE HIGH OR LOWS. NOW THAT MY COMPETITIVE DAYS ARE OVER I USE IT WITH LIFE IN GENERAL.THIS BOOK HAS HELPED ME REALIZE ALOT ABOUT WHAT SOME OF MY IDOLS. IT ALSO HELPED ME WHEN I HAD A PARTICULAR PROBELM. I WOULD GO TO THAT CHAPTER AND READ WHAT SOME OF THE GREATEST PEOPLE INT THE WORLD WOULD DO INT THE SAME SITUTAION. GREAT QUOTES AS WELL AS GREAT SAYING. A MUST READ

Mackenzies Mission and Mackenzies Mountain
These 2 books were just great when I first read them. I had to read them over again just to embrace the feel of these two wonderful and different individuals. I have also read "Zacks" story Mackenzie's Pleasure, which left me hungry for "Chance's" story which will be a great one also. If you like the Mackenzies as much as I do, you also need to read Christmas Kisses, which has a story by Ms. Howard about the Mackenzie's baby sister Maris. I hope everyone enjoys these stories as much as I have. Happy reading!

Her very, very best!
I have read Ms. Howard's books since the beginning of time (it seems so anyway). I tend to reread her books because she's able to pack a lot of story into a relatively short book. Maybe her books seem short because I don't want to finish the book(s).Her MacKenzie's Mountain was outstanding and when MacKenzie's Mission came out I devoured it then went back and reread the first book. When Zack MacKenzie's book came out, again I reached for the 1st and 2nd books. Lo and behold, they are MISSING!!! I'm looking forward to Chance's, Maris', Josh's, etc. stories and hope that Ms. Howard has the time to develop these books. However, I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO REREAD THE FIRST TWO.P.S. I also loved the Dream Man and Angel Creek and several others but those were my favorites

SO GOOD!!
Wolf stole my breath and Joe stole my heart. Then I read Christmas Kisses with Maris' story and I became committed to the whole family. Zane's story is next! These weren't my first Linda Howard stories but they are the ones that got me hooked. I'm convinced she can't write a bad book!

The Magic of Ordinary Days
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (05 July, 2001)
Author: Ann Howard Creel
Average review score:

Entertaining blend of plot lines, history and fiction
I originally purchased this book as a present for my wife; she couldn't stop talking about it so I read it for myself. Set in rural Colorado in 1944, the main story revolves around an educated, progressive woman forced into an arranged marriage to a farmer due to the result of a fling with a soldier leaving for the war in 1944. As the main character, Livvy, tries to cope with the disappointment and loneliness of her situation, a great love story unfolds as she begins to really know the man she married. This was my wife's favorite portion of the book, and I have to admit it was done extremely well. The spice in the story comes in a sub- plot which has Livvy befriend girls in a Japanese- American interment camp who become involved with German POWs assigned to work on the local farms. What I belived to be a great piece of fiction turned out to be based on actual events as recorded in the Denver Post in 1944. Livvy must make some difficult decisions and the result is my favorite part of the book. Well written and paced just right, the novel is balanced, informative and thought provoking. A great read.

Beautully told story, well- written novel
The book opens with Olivia Dunne, a twenty- four year old with big dreams, being forced into an arranged marriage after succumbing to the advances of a handsome solder in 1944. It turns out her husband is a good man, but Olivia has nothing in common with the farmers that now surround her, and she befriends two girls, Japanese- Americans who were interned in a camp nearby. Their story culminates in a politically charged incident, based on actual events, involving the girls and German POWs from another camp. Olivia eventually begins to love her new home and even her husband, as she learns to make the best of what life has given her. Through Livvy's eyes, we feel the camp and the isolation of rural life only to discover an unexpected enchantment. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the sweet, often heart- wrenching dialogue between Livvy and Ray, and the vivid description of life on a farm in Colorado in 1944. As I read I felt I was there; the author creates a strong sense of "place." The incident between the Japanese- American girls and the German POW's is a bonus and made me turn the pages even faster. From a historical perspective, I learned of Japanese internment camps and German prisoner of war camps in Colorado and the impact they had on the people there.

Read this book!
Never have I read a book that so effectively portrays the lessons of growing up. There is a deep selection of "coming-of-age" books on bookstore shelves, but none of them captures maturation as Creel does in this gem.

During World War II, Olivia, a young woman from busy Denver finds herself pregnant and is shipped away to marry a lonely farmer in rural Southern Colorado. Seeking companionship, she befriends two Japanase-American sisters interned at a nearby internment camp. To give away more of the plot, ruins the excellent storyline.

Author Creel beautifully weaves a tapestry of Olivia's loss of childhood, her friends'loss of freedom and the loss of life created by war. She wonderfully depicts the limits that choices made in passion place upon those who act before considering all the consequences. She most effectively shows that facing life's challenges and learning from them brings about love and maturity.

The characters in Magic are not perfect but are truly noble. This is a true love story for men and women. It bears lessons for young adults and adult alike. It's message is one that we all need to read in this age of instant gratification.

Read this book!

The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power
Published in Paperback by New Life Foundation (May, 1988)
Author: Vernon Linwood Howard
Average review score:

An Excellent Spiritual Handbook for Seekers of Truth
The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power is en excellent starting point if you are ready to begin your own, personal spiritual journey. Vernon Howard avoids an ego-pleasing, erudite, overly philosophical approach, instead offering an extremely practical guide: the beginning steps to self-enlightenment. Taking as a basis that we are all living in a kind of psychic sleep, he offers practical techniques to 'wake up'.

For those who have already done a significant amount of spiritual reading, Howard's approach may seem 'populistic', but his dichotomy between the 'true self' and the 'false self' is misleadingly simple. In fact, he has distilled a very powerful thought system that is easy to understand for those who have little experience in spiritual matters but are looking for a better way of life, but that is also very much worth considering for those already well on their way.

An Eye-opening Spiritual Classic!
I first ran across this book when I was in College back in the late sixties. I walked into The San Jose Book Shop near San Jose State University and on a whim told the kindly, old gentleman that I would buy any one book in the store that he recommended. Without hesitation he handed me a copy of The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power by Vernon Howard. The title seemed a bit strange, but I had given the man my word so I bought it. I read the first chapter and found the book so unsettling that I threw it in the garbage. About six months later I decided that my mind was a bit too cluttered with repetitive thoughts and decided I would give the book another try. This time I bought it and found it just as unsettling as before. But this time I was a bit smarter and only threw it in the bottom of my closet. About six months went by until I again decided to give it another try. This time I only had to dig it out of my closet to begin reading. This time the book made perfect sense. Every word was golden! In other words I was now ready for the inspiring and uplifting message it contained. Over these many years I have worn out many copies from overuse. This book was a real stepping stone for me and I would not be the person I am today if this book had not opened my eyes to the spiritual purpose behind our everyday life. Now is this book the last word in spiritual knowledge? No, of course not. But it is a heck of a beginning! Those who read this book and apply its teaching with dedication in their daily lives will, by doing so, open themselves to further spiritual guidance. I recommend this book highly and I hope that many people will be inspired to read it based upon my review.

A truly extraordinary and life-changing book.
The title might seem odd but don't miss this one! For those looking into the meaning of life and themselves, I haven't come across a book so helpful, enjoyable nor easier to read than this one. God bless Mr. Vernon for lighting the path to the truth of why we are here and how we can enjoy our lives during the trip. Each re-reading is a new experience!

White Lies

Author: Linda Howard

Loved it!
One of Linda Howards best! I read it in one day simply because I could not put it down. I think it had a great start and an even better ending. Jay is approached by two men the very day she loses her job and is asked to identify her ex-spouse who was a victim of an explosion. The chemistry between them sizzles even before they know what the other looks like. It wasn't love at first sight as the first sight wasn't there for either of them. It only got better. It's a fast paced book you won't regret reading. The best thing about LH books is that none of her books are based on constant fighting between the main characters until the end when all works out. Her books make you feel good throughout... except Sarah's Child which I didn't really like because of the female character without a backbone.

Pure Excitement!!!
This book was a blast. It is a quick read and alot of fun. The action surrounding the love story is great. Jay is an emotionally grounded heroin and her ex-husband is everything she didn't expect, so the foundation is shaken a bit.

The suspense added into the story keeps you on the edge of your seat at all times. You never know whats gonna happen next. The love formed betweeen them is as strong as can be and what every person hopes for in their life.

This is truely prime Linda Howard story telling and is definately worth reading. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

White Lies was GREAT! Howard keeps you emotionally involved!
This book was one of Linda Howard's best! Right from the start I felt a strong interest and bond with Steve. Although he was near death and couldn't remember his name, his strength and character were so compelling that it was like you really knew him or wished you had. And Jay, she has all the qualities of an intelligent, strong, and loving heroine as she quietly fights to help a man, she barely knows, survive and love again. This is a book that stays with you, and personally I've read it at least 6 times, and I didn't want to put it down any of those times! I got so involved in the story that I laughed and cried right along with Jay and Steve. This is one of the sequels to Diamond Bay, as was Midnight Rainbow and Heartbreaker, and they were all well written, without any lulls in the action. It made me wish for more when they ended. Thank goodness for sequels!

Fighting for Your Marriage: Positive Steps for Preventing Divorce and Preserving a Lasting Love

Authors: Susan L. Blumberg, Howard J. Markman, Scott M. Stanley, and Dean S. Edell

This book saved our marriage!
My husband and I married in our mid thirties thinking we had a lock on good communication skills and knowing we were mature enough to really make this marriage work. Nonetheless, it wasn't long before we were "mired in muck". When a small conflict arose, we found ourselves so caught up in being right and fighting our point to the death that small events escalated into huge issues. We could feel the good things in our relationship slipping away and felt helpless to fix the problem. (This was AFTER reading probably 20 different books on marriage, doing the Barbara D'Angelis program, the Gary Smally Program, attending several couples workshops, etc.). Contemplating calling it quits on our marriage, I happened accross this book, loved it, then went to a PREP workshop. Our marriage is AWESOME. We actually know how to hear and be heard and have the skills to RESOLVE the conflicts. (By the way, note the "I". My spouse hasn't read the book and refused to go to the workshop.) I learned the skills and used them in our marriage and our relationship changed. It even works with kids, in-laws, co-workers.... Yippee!

Should Be Required Reading
This book should be required reading for all couples getting married. If only I had read this book first, I could have avoided a lot of the bumps along the marital journey and saved myself and my spouse a lot of grief. Based on sound research and full of excerpts from real couples' lives, this book is now my favorite gift to newlyweds. It gives you great comfort to know that the arguments you and your spouse have occur in all marriages at different times. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking at making their marriage last for the long haul!

One of the best relationship books on the market for couples
I have been trained by Markman, Stanley and Blumberg in the PREP program. Since the training, my spouse and I have worked with couples using their techniques and I have delivered numerous short presentations on the PREP program. The book is an excellent introduction to the process and if followed carefully, it can enrich the relationship of engaged couples and improve any marriage. I highly recommend it. Dr. M. Smart Mobs

Here it Comes
By reading this review you're participating in smart mob technology. Congratulations.

I try to stay abreast of science and media technologies, but occasionally a book comes across my desk (I'm a journalist) that puts the pieces together in a way that induces epiphanies in readers - casting a shadow in their minds that sends their thoughts to the book again and again.

In "Smart Mobs" Howard Rheingold looks at the wireless ubiquitous vomitous glorious instruments that continue to invade our lives, and asks some highly relevant questions about how they'll reshape our social structures, what it will mean to always be connected, and what threats this technology poses to "individuality", human rights, health, and sanity. He reminds us in a McLuhanesque way that any time you use a tool to change the world, it also changes you.

Digital telepathy, augmented reality, computers coordinating human interaction - it's all here. It's all big.

Learn what life will be like in the 21st century
Howard Rheingold has the gift of being able to tell the future. Not like a gypsy peering into a crystal ball, but like an astute observer with the brilliant ability to integrate and analyze seemingly disparate phenomena into a cohesive look at the world ahead.

Rheingold has been involved with computer technology for enough decades to be able to tell the difference between hype and significant events, and his experience shines through in Smart Mobs. I found gems of insight in every chapter of Smart Mobs, and the book has changed the way I look at the networked world.

As a book reviewer, I tons of business/technology books in the mail. Most get skimmed and discarded. Smart Mobs is a keeper.

Design for Community Mini Review
Howard Rheingold has impeccable timing. In the mid 80s, aware that personal computers were changing the way we think, he wrote Tools for Thought. In the early 90s, he explored how emerging digital networks were changing social groups in The Virtual Community. Twice now he's put words to important social/digital trends, years before they reach critical mass.

So when Rheingold writes a book, it's a good idea to pay attention. His new book, Smart Mobs, takes a hard look at what happens when networked virtual communication goes mobile. And it's a mind-bending read.

Consider for a moment that, for a good many years, personal computers sat in offices and living rooms totally disconnected from each other. It seems quaint now, but I remember that time. And if you can remember the sea change that happened in the world when all those computers (and the people behind them) got connected to the internet, you can get some inkling of the change Rheingold predicts is on its way when that same networked computational power goes mobile.

We're in for another whirlwind of change in technology, and with it, a change in the way communities come together and express themselves. The book is a captivating exploration of what these new technologies are (think internet-enabled, location-aware mobile phones and PDAs) and how they're already shaping communities around the world.

Howard's writing is engaging and deep, and the book is an evenhanded exploration of the new technology, both good and bad. If you want a glimpse of the virtual communities of the future, pick up his book and follow the ongoing conversation at smartmobs.com.

Move over "Sarah Lee!" Look out "Krispy Kreams!" There's a new Sheriff In Town..Howard J. Rankin,PhD. & his sidekick; "Inspired To Lose!"

A Truly Inspiring Book
On too many occasions, books that are dedicated to helping people lose weight are too full of the basic "I ate less and started exercising more" stories. How boring (even though it's true). I want to hear about people that will INSPIRE me to keep going when all I want to do is quit. We all love to hear about how someone triumphs over adversity to reach their goal. Weight loss is no different. If it were truly that easy to lose weight then there would be a lot less overweight people in the U.S. And I doubt most overweight people would agree that the reason that they overeat is so that they can be treated poorly by society or to set themselves up for having a weight related disease such as heart disease or diabetes. Losing weight is a complex issue. It takes more than just eating less and exercising more. The stories that Dr. Rankin has insightfully included in his book deal with people who have low self-esteem, were abused as children or were just raised in families with skewed eating habits. It takes a very courageous person to get through the underlying issues and make their health a priority. Dr. Rankin sensitively approaches the many challenges that overweight people face. After reading this book, you will not only have more empathy for yourself if you are overweight but also for any other overweight person.

Phoenemenal stories of inspiration
For anyone struggling with the inability to lose weight, this book brings into focus the 'true' struggle and eventual triumph of 35 people who have 'run the gamut.....and won'.

This should be definitely pushed for those people who need help and this is the way to help them, help themselves!

Kudos to Dr. Rankin and the contributors.

Takes A Real Load Off My Mind!! Thank You!
After trying to solve others problems, encourage them, give them advice, no matter how great I thought they were, this book awakened me to the idea of letting others come up with their own answers and how I could stop allowing myself to be emotionally manipulated. I feel like I have just come out of a coma in this area.

Until now I never understood what people really wanted when they started unloading their feelings and problems to me. They didn't want me to solve their propblems or fix their lives, they simply wanted their feelings validated so they could then come up with their own solutions. For me this is the most valuable information I have found in the last 15 years.

The applications for use of this information are unlimited. I was speaking with a very successful collections agent. As we were talking, the subject of validating people's feelings came up. She told me that this was her secret to collecting on accounts that no one else had been able to.

For me the possiblities for applications of these concepts in all of my personal and business relationships is fantastic.

Thank you Gary & Joy

Excellent information
I wish I'd had this book, these principals, years ago. The book is well-written, easy to understand, and with practice, the principals work. I've found that they also have helped free me from guilt about not being able to fix everything.
